The first 28 days of an infant’s life are some of the most precious, but also most vulnerable days.
Nearly 2.6 million newborn lives are lost annually during the neonatal period alone - largely from preventable causes.
At this rate, by the year 2030, an estimated 30 million newborn lives will be lost, with India bearing nearly 25% of the global burden at an infant death rate of 25 per 1,000 live births.
Preterm birth is the leading cause of under-five mortality, and with 15 million infants born preterm annually, it accounts for 44% of India’s neonatal mortality burden.
THE BUNTY BLOUSE
The Bunty Blouse is a novel saree blouse designed to encourage the practice of kangaroo mother care (KMC) in rural Indian populations. The saree is a traditional Indian garment wrapped around the waist and over the shoulder. Worn underneath is the blouse, which comes in all different shapes, colors, and materials.
The Bunty Blouse allows infants to stay secure while maintaining skin-to-skin contact with their mothers for prolonged periods of time. It encourages and facilitates bonding, while being mindful of cultural sensitivities to bare skin exposure. By integrating KMC into the traditional attire, we aim to increase the uptake of its practice.
KMC alone has been shown to reduce preterm mortality by upwards of 40% and through the use of the Bunty Blouse, we aim to bridge the gap in access in health care so each newborn has an equal opportunity to not only survive, but thrive.
